Dog ate my homework !

In the year 1983 on the 12th of October, a third grader named Winslow Greenbay created history. On this particular day he had gone to school without his Latin assignment. When the teacher asked him about the assignment he was thinking fast for a clever excuse and blurted ‘My dog ate it!’. You might not feel this statement as being particularly creative, but was actually a breakthrough. Historians say that this was the first time one of the world’s famous excuses was used. Winslow’s teacher however did not buy the excuse and caned him mercilessly in front of the entire class. This incident lead to the birth of a legend. From that point of time more and more kids have used this excuse in their classrooms in countless schools. To our knowledge this excuse has never worked. So the next time you forget to do your homework and when your are questioned by your teacher, place a picture of ‘the dog ate my homework’ in your school bag, hold your bag out and give your excuse. The teacher will at least get a good laugh before your are caned in front of your entire class.

Against Homework

You know what is the impact of homework in American Education. To put it in simple words more homework is being assigned to younger children than ever before. But is it a good trend, more teachers are beginning to think it is not. Many thoughtful educational professionals across the country have began to alter their homework policies. They make sure that homework are more like projects that connect the school and family. Others have began to assign less homework. Some teachers instruct their parents that their child should work on homework only for 20 to 30 minutes and when the time comes to an end the child should stop regardless of how much he or she has completed.

The average time that a student spends in doing homework has skyrocketed in the recent years. Parents spend countless number of hours assisting their kids to complete such assignment without thinking about the fact whether it would serve any worthwhile purpose. Only one among a hundred teachers surveyed had taken a course specifically on planning and assigning homework during the training. Homework is taking a serious toll in families across the world. It robs children of proper physical, emotional and neurological development. It also shortens their sleep, play and time for exercise. This makes school the only place in our society where a person has to work all day long, return home and work some more.

This blog against homework shows how too much homework will have a negative effect on the development and achievement of our children. This will help us think on the steps that we need to advocate for change.

Homework Practice

Homework and practice are connected in a context when students learn on their own and apply the knowledge they have gained in the subject. The quantity of homework that is assigned to the student should increase as the students get older. The purpose of assigning the homework should be articulated and identified. The involvement of parents should be kept to a minimum while the student is attempting to do the homework. If a homework is assigned there should be a feedback. Right amount of homework can be calculated as follows:

Elementary level 30 – 40 minutes
Middle level 50 – 60 minutes
High School 120 minutes

Research has proved that there are negative effects when parents help their children with their homework. Establish a schedule for completing the homework. Encourage and motivate your child but do not sit with them to do the homework. A homework policy has to be communicated while assigning homework. Clearly mention the purpose and outcome. The approaches to feedback should vary. Mastering the skills require a fair amount of practice. During practice a student should adapt and understand what they have learned. During the practice chart your speed and accuracy. Focus on assignments that have specific elements of a process or complex skill. Plan your time to understand the process and acquire the skills required.

Should Teachers Give Homework ?

There are certain questions that has been shaking the field of education for a long time, this is one such question, why do teachers give homework?. Since we have a good relationship with lot of teachers we had been constantly questioning them the reason for homework being given to students. Homework is something a teacher has to assign their students once they complete teaching a portion of the subject as mandated by the ministry of education. Home work is assigned to students with an intention that important facts and skills get integrated into the minds of students.

As for our observation is concerned, teachers do not enjoy giving you home work. A piece of homework might take an hour’s time for a student to complete. Taking into consideration that the teacher has to grade more than twenty pieces of homework for one class alone and would also have to handle the other classes as well for the number of subjects taken the teacher has to spend more than three hours marking assignments and grading homework.

The question is how much homework be given to a student and how often? , What impact should homework have on a student’s grade? , Are students doing their homework and are they enjoying it at the same time? To make things effective homework needs to be seen as a tool and should be used properly. The knowledge that a student gets in doing a homework and its usefulness pay a vital role in the planning process before a homework is allotted by the teachers. Teachers give homework because we need it and also because they have to.

Too much of homework will definitely burden the students and is a major cause for school burn outs. Once the student reaches home he or she is often quizzed by their parents “Do you have any homework to be done?”. He reaches school without completing a homework and asks his friend “Can i copy your homework?” . The teacher enters the class and questions him “Did you do last night’s homework?”. With homework in all the subjects it is sure to causes immense stress in the minds of students. Homework is not a bad thing, too much homework is.

Cease the Homework Nag:

Mentioned below are some quick and easy tips on how to make your children do their homework independently and give you peace of mind:

Tip 1 : Keep the study desk organized:
In the beginning of the year we start with a lot of supplies and as days go on students are held up with busy schedules and the study desk gets filled with junk. Get the desk cleaned up and make sure that papers, pencils, pens and erasers are readily available. Easy access to stationery helps in doing the work faster.

Tip 2 : Use colorful pictures on the homework schedule:
Use colorful pictures to prompt children about their homework schedule. You can click pictures of their books on that subject, prepare small and colorful charts with some detail regarding the assignment and put it on their table in order to remind them complete the assignment. Most of the students grasp information easily when it is visually placed before them. This saves your voice and prevents them from being nagged.

Tip 3: Allow your child to make an attempt:
When children come across work which they are not sure of, they immediately ask for help. Don’t jump to their desk to help them. Instead you can prompt your child to try and attempt to solve the problem before they seek out for your help. Ask them to try and work through the homework and once they finish you can help them with the questions they got stuck on. This gives your child courage to face problems independently.

Tip 4: Offer exciting motivators :
Children get motivated when you offer exciting motivators like a bonus play date, extra outdoor play time or a gift for your child. Its been a long day at school and your child would be exhausted as he returns home. Maintain your child’s energy by offering exciting and new reinforcements if they complete their assignments. If the homework is scheduled before an exciting event like a trip to the park or a base ball game, it will help pick up your child’s pace while doing homework.

Whatever it takes, don’t nag! Be positive and stay organized.
