In the year 1983 on the 12th of October, a third grader named Winslow Greenbay created history. On this particular day he had gone to school without his Latin assignment. When the teacher asked him about the assignment he was thinking fast for a clever excuse and blurted ‘My dog ate it!’. You might not feel this statement as being particularly creative, but was actually a breakthrough. Historians say that this was the first time one of the world’s famous excuses was used. Winslow’s teacher however did not buy the excuse and caned him mercilessly in front of the entire class. This incident lead to the birth of a legend. From that point of time more and more kids have used this excuse in their classrooms in countless schools. To our knowledge this excuse has never worked. So the next time you forget to do your homework and when your are questioned by your teacher, place a picture of ‘the dog ate my homework’ in your school bag, hold your bag out and give your excuse. The teacher will at least get a good laugh before your are caned in front of your entire class.
