Uncle Sam is the symbol of the United States as a nation and more specifically the American Government. Its origin was from a person named Samuel Wilson, who was the inspector of beef and pork purchased for the government after the declaration of war against england in the year 1812. During the war the Wilson brothers received a contract from the Government to supply meat to the soldiers of war. All the casks and barrels that passed his inspection bore his initials “U.S” on it although it stood for the United States which is the most common abbreviation at that point of time.
Uncle Sam was known for his sense of humor and business acquaintances by his friends. He had many farms and was rallied on the extent of his possessions. There is a popular song which says “Uncle Sam is rich enough to give us all a farm”. During the war army soldiers began joking that their food came from Uncle Sam and called themselves soldiers of Uncle Sam. By the year 1820 Uncle Sam was beginning to be used as a term for the United States. More than 4 million copies of his picture was printed and was used extensively during world war II to motivate young men to join the army and serve the country. For more than over 170 years, uncle Sam’s name has been used to evoke Identity, loyalty and Patriotism of Americans.
