Reading Tips

Listed below are few reading tips which will be of good use for students:

Give yourself time:
Read the title and prepare your mind to study the subject.

Take Notes:
Some people copy down quotations in order to remember them, some people make maps or hierarchies, some people write their own thoughts about what they’ve read

Know what you are reading:
What era is it from? What year? , Does it have an author? multiple authors? , Where was it written? Where was it published? , What kind of work is it?

Make a time-line:
Make a time line for yourself.Use the timeline as an aid to memory, not as a way of making arguments. Chronology is important, but it isn’t that important

Have an eye for detail:
Quickly look over each boldface heading and subheading – organize your mind before you begin to read – build a structure for the thoughts and details to come.

Coordinate with other texts:
re there “intertextual” references?, What is the nature of this reference?,What are the “common” texts referred to?,re there things the author assumes “everyone knows”? What are they and do you know them?
